WILL EISNER: The Birth of the Graphic Novel

1978.   Comiczeichner Will Eisner ist gelangweilt. Zwar hat der geniale Stilist über die Jahre erfolgreiche Titel wie den herausragenden Batman/ Philip Marlowe-Mix „The Spirit“ lanciert, jedoch scheint das Medium Comic, beschränkt auf seine jeweils 32 Heftseiten und häufig unterbrochen durch Werbung, Eisners Vorstellungen, wie man eine Geschichte erzählen kann, nicht mehr zu genügen. Zudem drängen aus dem Untergrund rücksichtlosere, teils experimentelle Formate wie „Zap“ und schnüren dem doch oft auf Superhelden limitierten Genre die Luft ab. Will Eisner entscheidet sich für die Entwicklung einer Story, die zwar in Comicform erzählt werden soll, jedoch mit dem Strip-Layout verhafteten, in seinen Augen hoffnungslos veralteten Comicheft nichts mehr zu tun haben soll. Das Ergebnis: Hunderte Seiten brillanter Zeichnungen, arrangiert mit revolutionärem Panel-Use, eine richtige, der Belletristik ebenbürtige Dramaturgie, kurz: ein illustrierter Roman. Vier kunstvoll miteinander verwobene, autobiografisch angehauchte Handlungsstränge. Und natürlich keine Werbung. Mit diesem Werk setzte Eisner nicht weniger als einen bis heute gültigen Standard, der streng genommen den Status Quo des Zeichners auf eine neue Ebene hob - auf die eines ernstzunehmenden Künstlers. Das Ergebnis, betitelt „ A Contract with God“, sollte ein neues literarisches Genre begründen und wurde bekannt unter einem faszinierenden Namen: Graphic Novel.

Bis heute trägt der bedeutendste Preis für Comic-Künstler überhaupt den Namen des 2005 88jährig gestorbenen Meisters. Der Erhalt eines Eisner Awards ist ein Ritterschlag für jeden in der Industrie tätigen Zeichner.

After the success of Low Cost Design vol. I, Daniele Pario Perra continues, in this second volume, his original research project of the so-called “spontaneous design”, documenting the smart solutions created by anonymous designers to find a way to sort out everyday problems or needs. The book therefore presents hundreds of examples of unconventional creativity: a re-use, or better, a modified and enlightened use not only of objects, but also of actions and projects that can change the use of the territory, thus revealing people’s innovative customs and great imagination. The presented ideas are classified, as in the first volume, according to different reading levels: five different project levels for objects and eleven categories for actions (five more than in the first volume). Images are introduced by a text by Daniele Pario Perra and by a series of chapters written like a blog with a contribution of several authors on the themes ranging from objects history to design aesthetics, from creativity to handicraft, from urban tribes to territory culture and planning, thus presenting not only some important aspects on the subject, but also a very interesting overview from the contemporary social, urban and ethnographic point of view

Tokyo at night is a thrilling place. Neon lights up the buildings, while the pavements and bars are packed with bustling crowds. And, as in many other cities around the world, the streets are full of taxis. What makes Tokyo exceptional, however, are the signs on top of its taxi cabs. Hundreds of taxi firms operate in the city, and each has its own distinctive illuminated sign. Stars, globes, lanterns, cherry blossoms and even frogs and waving cats all feature in an array of vibrant colours. Photographer Alexander James set himself the task of capturing the most eye-catching of these signs –no mean feat, because some of the firms have as few as four cars on the road. In spite of having to work long, unsociable hours, the drivers take great pride in offering the highest standards of service and in keeping their cabs spotlessly clean, allowing the bright lights to reflect off the gleaming surfaces. Sharing some of the anecdotes he has heard from taxi drivers during his late-night travels, James portrays a city that literally dazzles after dark.


Alexander James is a critically acclaimed photographer whose work has been exhibited around the world. His recent projects address social, political and environmental issues, and his images have appeared in such publications as Design Week, Monograph and the Los Angeles Times Magazine.
