How To Be German in 50 Easy Steps!

Zweisprachiges Wendebuch Deutsch/Englisch

A guide from Apfelsaftschorle to Tschüss

Breakfast lavishly, pre-book all your holidays years in advance, dress sensibly and obey the red man! How to be German presents all the little absurdities that make living in Germany such a pleasure. It’s required reading for all Ausländer and for Germans who sometimes have the feeling they don’t understand their own country. We learn why the Germans speak so freely about sex, why they are so obsessed with Spiegel Online and why they all dream of being naked in a lake of Apfelsaftschorle. At the end, the only thing left to say to Adam Fletcher’s love letter to Germany is ‚Alles klar!’

Introducing: Culture Identities

Design for Museums, Theaters and Cultural Institutions

An inside look by designers and clients at graphic design’s main playground and proving ground—working for cultural institutions.

This book takes an inside look at graphic design’s main playground and proving ground—working for cultural institutions. One would be hard pressed to find another area of graphic design in which the work is so fresh and experimental and so often serves as a precursor for future visual trends.

Introducing: Culture Identities features outstanding poster campaigns, publications, and cross-platform corporate design for international cultural institutions by both young designers, who are striving to prove themselves creatively, and established studios, who are experimenting with new forms of visual expression. In the book, readers not only hear from designers who are especially active in the cultural field, such as Bureau Mirko Borsche, the New York-based studio 2x4, James Goggin, and Johannes Erler, but also from notables on the client side including MoMA, the Barbican, Van Abbemuseum, and documenta.
With its selection of striking collaborations between innovative designers and visionary cultural institutions, Introducing: Culture Identities presents the field of visual identities for cultural clients as a continuous dialogue that pushes the limit of what is possible creatively.

Let's be honest! We all want a JETPACK.

You're All Just Jealous Of My Jetpack

Tom Gauld

A NEW COLLECTION FROM THE GUARDIAN AND NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE CARTOONIST

New York Times Magazine cartoonist Tom Gauld follows up his widely praised graphic novel Goliath with You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack, a collection of cartoons made for The Guardian. Over the past eight years, Gauld has produced a weekly cartoon for the Saturday Review section of Britain’s most well regarded newspaper. Only a handful of comics from this huge and hilarious body of work have ever been printed in North America – exclusively within the pages of the prestigious Believer magazine. You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack distils perfectly Gauld’s dark humor, impeccable timing, and distinctive style. Arrests by the fiction police and fictional towns designed by Tom Waits intermingle hilariously with piercing observations about human behavior and whimsical imaginings of the future. Again and again, Tom Gauld reaffirms his position as a first rank cartoonist, creating work infused with a deep understanding of both literary and cartoon history.

A User's Guide to Neglectful Parenting

A User's Guide to Neglectful Parenting
by Guy Delisle

MEDITATIONS ON FATHERHOOD FROM THE AUTHOR OFJERUSALEM: CHRONICLES FROM THE HOLY CITY

With A User’s Guide to Neglectful Parenting, the trademark dry humor that pervades Guy Delisle’s landmark and praised graphic travelogues takes center stage. Quick, light vignettes play on the worries and cares any young parent might have, and offer wry solutions to the petty frustrations of being a dad who works from home.

Readers familiar with Delisle’s stranger-in-a-strange-land technique for storytelling (employed in Jerusalem, Pyongyang, Burma, and Shenzhen) will recognize the titular parent in this book; Delisle’s travelogues were simultaneously portraits of complex places and times, and portraits of a stay-at-home dad’s ever-changing relationship with his children while his wife is out working for Doctors Without Borders. The relationship between young child and all-too-irony-aware parent is beautifully done here, and Delisle’s loose flowing style has been set free, creating a wonderful sense of motion throughout. A User’s Guide to Neglectful Parenting is an intimate, offbeat look at the joys of parenting.

Dr Lakra - Art from Oaxaca, Mexico

This book gathers the splendid work of Mexican artist Dr. Lakra, who super imposes mystical, ancient or funerary symbolism gang tattoos, bones and skulls, Aztec warrior heads, spider webs, serpents and demons onto vintage advertisements, girlie pinups, Japanese prints, baby dolls, cast skulls and the like, attaining an effect that resembles a Dia de los Muertos altar slyly erected in place of a kitchen table in the home-furnishings section of a Mexico City department store. In one way or another, the noncivilized human, the nonrefined, the primitive, is always been repressed, in a way that s almost criminal. Dr. Lakra, who also works as a tattoo artist, has said. I think that through these themes you can define the essence of culture. This lavishly illustrated volume contains 120 color images of Lakra s work, plus a contribution from renowned Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco.

Dr Lakra (Jeronimo Lopez Ramirez, born 1972, Mexico) is an artist and tattooist based in Oaxaca, Mexico. Apart from tattooing, his art involves embellishing images and other found objects - for instance, dolls, old medical illustrations, and pictures in 1950s Mexican magazines - with macabre or tattoo-style designs.
He has shown work internationally in many exhibitions including Stolen Bike at the Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York, Los Dos Amigos at MACO in Mexico, Pin Up at Tate Modern and Pierced Hearts and True Love at The Drawing Center in New York.

NEW BOOK of Gestalten: Rock the Shack

Rock the Shack

The Architecture of Cabins, Cocoons and Hide-Outs
Rock the Shack takes us to the places we long for. For the first time in the history of humankind, more people live in cities than in the country. Yet, at the same time, more and more city dwellers are yearning for rural farms, mountain cabins, or seaside homes. These kinds of refuges offer modern men and women a promise of what urban centers usually cannot provide: quiet, relaxation, being out of reach, getting back to basics, feeling human again.

Rock the Shack is a survey of such contemporary refuges from around the world—from basic to luxury. The book features a compelling range of sparingly to intricately furnished cabins, cottages, second homes, tree houses, transformations, shelters, and cocoons. The look of the included structures from the outside is just as important as the view from inside. What these diverse projects have in common is an exceptional spirit that melds the uniqueness of a geographic location with the individual character of the building’s owner and architect.

Barry McGee

Barry McGee

D.A.P./University of California, Berkley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive

Published on the occasion of the first major survey of Barry McGee’s work, this monumental volume records more than two decades of incredible fecundity, over the course of which McGee has pioneered a new iconography of sharp street vitality and graphic snap. McGee began as a graffiti artist on the streets of San Francisco, working under such tags as Ray Fong, Twist and Twisto, and his work since then has hugely expanded the terms of both street art and contemporary art. The freshness of McGee’s work stems in part from his virtuoso handling and consolidation of a whole panoply of influences, from hobo art, sign painting and graffiti to comics, Beat literature and much else. His extraordinary skill as a draughtsman is energized by his insistence on pushing at the parameters of art--his work can be shockingly informal in the gallery and surprisingly elegant on the street--and by his keen nose for social malaise. This volume revisits McGee’s most influential installations in art spaces, and considers the evolution of his aesthetic within institutional settings. Previously unseen photographs by Craig Costello document the artist’s work on the streets of San Francisco in the early 90s, highlighting the contributions of his friends and mentors. Also included are images from the artist’s famous slide lecture, compiled and refined over the past 20 years, and an oral history of the Bay Area’s Mission School by McGee’s friends, mentors and collaborators. Featuring 450 images, including many never before published, the book is designed by the artist in collaboration with Conny Purtill.

Barry McGee (born 1966) began exhibiting his work in the 1980s--not in a museum or gallery setting but on the streets of San Francisco. In the early 90s he was closely associated with the Mission School and the San Francisco Bay Area’s graffiti boom. In 2001 his work was included in the Venice Biennale.

NEU: Atlas der Vorurteile

Atlas der Vorurteile

Yanko Tsetkov

Comic: Jinchalo by Matthew Forsythe

Jinchalo

Matt Forsythe

From the author of Ojingog, another of enchantment and adventure.

Jinchalo is Korean for "Really?" and that question (formulated variously as "What is and what isn't?" "What is real?" and "What is imagined?") is at the heart of this book. A companion to Matthew Forsythe's vastly successful OjingogoJinchalo stars the same  little girl as its heroine. When Jinchalo lands them in some hot water, the pair is forced to flee the safety of their home. In the course of their flight, they visit a robot garden, follow a vine into the clouds, and leave their village far, far behind.

These comics are firmly rooted in Korean folktales and stylistic conventions, with a playful, joyously drawn line. Jinchalowelcomes readers back into Forsythe's Miyazaki-tinged dreamscape, where spotted octopi fly and bears give piggyback rides, where hummingbirds are larger than people, and a sad furry monster wearing a bowler hat lurks around every corner. Forsythe uses page space innovatively in this wordless panel-less book. Both simple
and intricately detailed, his storytelling is compelling for all ages.
